The University of Louisiana at Lafayette‘s office of first-year experience hosted the first Freshman Finale in three years on April 25 on Boucher Street and in the Rose Garden.

The Freshman Finale consisted of an inflatable carnival with four water fun-jumps, a dunking booth and a DJ. The freshmen were given free t-shirts which said “I survived freshman year” on the back, and Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers catered the event.

Jessie White, a doctorate student and staff member at the office of first-year experience said she spoke with her UNIV 100 class and asked them what they would like for an end-of-the-year celebration. White said one of her students had the idea of an inflatable carnival.

“We actually only planned for 300,” White said. “We thought that was pushing it, and I’m really excited that more than 300 showed up.”

The location of the Freshman Finale was decided to be near the dorms because the freshmen are usually in the dorms, and when they come out, it’s the first thing they see, according to White.

White said she heard a lot of positive remarks about the event, however, not all the freshmen were thrilled. Freshmen Avianne Majors, a sociology major, and Jerrineika Williams, an education major, attended the Freshman Finale and said the event needed more activities and more space. Majors said she’d like to see more than just water inflatables while Williams said she’d prefer if the event was in a larger area that way the line for t-shirts and food wouldn’t take up most of the space.

“A lot of kids like inflatables,” said Majors. “I’m not going to call us ‘kids.’ We like to act like a kid, and this is fun. We just need more and a bigger space.”
