How UL Lafayette Ranks in Crime Reports

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette ranks second as the safest campus from crime compared to other surveyed universities in Louisiana.

According to UL Lafayette’s Clery report, the number of rape and aggravated assault reported has consistently been below five since 2015. However, the number of reported non-violent crime has risen.

Burglary has risen from 20 in 2015 to 43 in 2017, according to the Clery report. In contrast, Louisiana State University holds the number one spot for most burglary related crime with 70 burglary crimes reported in 2015 and 40 in 2017.

UL Lafayette has shown a high level of drug related crimes with 15 drug crimes reported in 2015 and 28 in 2017.

In several other crime categories, UL Lafayette showed very low rates when compared to the other universities.

A few students had doubts about the safety of UL Lafayette’s campus. Ebiuwa Aduwa, a senior majoring in finance, said she felt safe sometimes, but since the 2016 presidential election, she felt a lot of hateful things have been done around campus.

Mariah Jones, a senior majoring in kinesiology, said she felt the campus could be easily accessed by anyone.

Ladajah Fontenette, a senior majoring in kinesiology, said she did not feel safe on campus and was surprised at UL Lafayette’s safety ranking.

The University of Louisiana at Monroe has reported the least amount of crime across almost all categories. The university’s Clery report listed no aggravated assault across three years and one case of rape in 2016 and 2017.

UL Monroe is the least crime riddled school on the list.

Louisiana State University ranks first in most crime reported for drug law violations, liquor law violations and motor vehicle theft.

Liquor law violations were at a high in 2016 with 321 crimes reported. The university’s drug law violations have gone down from 175 reported in 2015 to 65 reported in 2017.

The LSU police department did not respond to the university’s high crime report.

Tulane University has separate Clery reports for its Downtown campus and its Uptown campus. The university’s Downtown campus ranks second for least amount of crime reported from 2015 to 2017.

However, Tulane’s Uptown campus showed a significant increase in rape crimes reported and burglary crimes reported. The Uptown campus reported 14 cases of rape in 2015 and 18 cases of rape in 2017.

Tulane’s police department did not respond to the university’s high crime report.
